Cartagena, Colombia
A Trip to Remember
My visit to Cartagena, Colombia was a pure stroke of luck. I searched my desktop globe trying to fill some extra vacation days with a location that didn't require a 24+ hour flight. In roughly two months out I had a a trip planned to New Zealand and Fij and needed a short trip to scratch the travel itch without destroying my budget or requiring long flights. Wanting something a little less commercial than whats typically offered by the Caribbeans my eyes settled on on Cartagena, Colombia. I wasn't a stranger to Colombia as I had previously visited Bogota ,Colombia a couple of years ago as part of a work trip. What was planned as a quick trip to Colombia turned out to be a trip of a lifetime....
Getting There
Colombia has 5 international airports located in Bogota, Cartagena, Medellin, Cali, and Barranquilla. Bogota, the capital of Colombia and top business hub, has the most direct flights from several US cities. The quickest and cheapest way to get there is thru Miami. We chose Avianca airlines from Miami to connect directly to Medellin with a second leg stop to Cartagena. We paid for a domestic ticket but somehow we got upgraded to first class for free. Little did we know that this good fortunre would follow us throughout our trip.
